Unnatural Disaster Response

The man-made climate crisis is causing an unnatural frequency of increasingly severe weather disasters. When these happen, our communities must be well-equipped to respond.

We want to be able to organize these responses more frequently and efficiently. If you want to help, join this initiative’s volunteer registry. When one comes up, we’ll send you an email with details. We are also working on an Unnatural Disaster Aid Fund for those looking to donate.

Heatwave Cooling Stations

In 2021, BC faced the hottest heatwave on record, claiming 619 lives. The majority of these deaths were elders, disabled, or low-income people without access to cooling systems.

Climate Recentered runs annual cooling stations at Surrey Central Station, a Skytrain stop that has a high number of unhoused people. You can grab cold water, Gatorade, apply sunscreen, grab some snacks, and take a seat in the shade. We keep volunteers with First Aid and Naloxone training on shift at all times.

Cold Snap Clothing Distribution

The climate crisis doesn’t just mean higher temperatures, it means all weather will become more erratic and severe. The 2024 January Cold Snap is a prime example, with many cold temperature records in BC being broken.

On the short notice, a few of our team members went to Surrey Central Station to distribute thrifted and donated warm clothing to residents.
